Overview
We are looking for a RI to join our Audit and Accounts Team. The Responsible Individual (RI) will take overall responsibility for the firm’s audit portfolio, ensuring audits are planned, performed, reviewed, and reported in accordance with UK auditing standards, ethical requirements, and regulatory expectations. The RI will play a key leadership role in maintaining audit quality, developing the audit team, and supporting the six partners in the strategic growth of the firm’s audit offering.
Candidate Profile (Essential Requirements):
- ACA or ACCA qualified (or equivalent), with RI status or eligibility to obtain RI status in the UK.
- Strong technical knowledge of UK auditing and accounting standards.
- Proven experience signing audit opinions within an SME or mid-tier practice environment.
- Experience within a fast-paced, client- focused practice environment ideally worked in an independent firm of one to three partners.
- Proven experience in managing, reviewing, and developing a team.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with track record of building and maintaining senior- level client relationships.
Key responsibilities and duties:
Audit & Regulatory Responsibility
- Act as Responsible Individual under the firm’s Audit Registration, in accordance with ICAEW/ACCA/RCN requirements.
- Sign audit reports and accept ultimate responsibility for audit opinions issued by the firm.
- Ensure compliance with UK GAAP, IFRS (where applicable), ISAs (UK), Ethical Standards, and relevant Companies Act requirements.
- Maintain oversight of audit quality, including planning, risk assessment, execution, completion, and reporting.
Quality & Compliance
- Lead and maintain the firm’s system of quality management (ISQM 1 & ISQM 2).
- Prepare for and manage regulatory monitoring visits and inspections.
- Address findings from regulators and implement remedial actions where required.
- Keep partners and staff informed of changes in auditing, accounting, and ethical standards.
Client Management
- Act as lead audit partner/RI on a portfolio of SME and group audits.
- Build strong, trusted relationships with clients, acting as a key technical and commercial adviser.
- Handle complex technical audit and accounting matters, including judgments and estimates.
- Support partners with audit-related input during client proposals and tenders.
Team Leadership & Development
- Provide leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to audit managers, seniors, and trainees.
- Review audit files at key stages and provide constructive feedback.
- Support recruitment, training, and appraisal of audit staff.
- Foster a culture of quality, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
Practice Development
- Work collaboratively with the 6 partners to shape the future of the firm’s audit practice.
- Identify opportunities to grow and improve the audit and assurance service line.
- Contribute to cross-selling opportunities with accounts, tax, and advisory teams.
- Assist with setting audit policies, procedures, and pricing strategies.
- Preparing fee quotes and liaising with clients to organise the provision of audit, accountancy, and tax services.
- Responsibility for managing WIP recoveries, billing clients and meeting deadlines.
Business Development
- Identify opportunities for new business and assist in activities such as building relationships with target clients or involvement in pitch situations.
- Participate in marketing and leadership initiatives (seminars and publications).
- Aims to increase client portfolio year on year.
Employees/Ad hoc
- Ensuring that the audit and accounts team and direct reports are aware of Arnold Hill’s values and HR Strategy.
- Assist in supervising and managing the audit and accounts staff, including having a responsibility for the coaching and development of the team members, and taking responsibility for career development of others.
- Participates in promotions and salary reviews.
- Regularly assisting colleagues within the wider firm with technical accounting and financial reporting matters.
- Supervise, manage and coach audit staff and direct reports, taking responsibility of development of team members.
- Lead the appraisal process for the team, manage workload distribution, and ensure adherence to firm values and HR policies.
- Encourage team efficiency and compliance with firm administrative standards, including timely completion of timesheet and engagement deadlines.
- Attend disciplinaries with HR when necessary.
